Why reverse cycle air conditioners are so popular across Australia

Reverse cycle air conditioners offer all-year-round comfort, energy and cost efficiency. Yet in fact, the list of their advantages doesn’t end there. In this week’s blog, find out how reverse cycle technology has become one of the nation’s favourite cooling and heating technologies.

How do reverse cycle air conditioners work?

In general, a reverse-cycle air conditioner – also known as a “heat pump” – can both warm and cool your home. That means that it uses a refrigeration cycle to cool your home and a reverse cycle to warm it up.

Technically, in order to heat the house, reverse cycle air conditioners extract heat from the outside air and transfers it inside. Here, a cold liquid (refrigerant) passes through an external coil while absorbing heat from the air. Then, a compressor pumps the refrigerant down through chambers and into a condenser. As the refrigerant is compressed, it warms up. Therefore, the hot air that results is distributed by a fan, out into the room, warming the area. After completion, the refrigerant flows through an evaporator to cool it down before repeating the cycle.

When reversing the process, the air conditioner blows cold air into your home instead, cooling you down on hot summer days.

What are the advantages of using reverse cycle air conditioning?

They keep you warm in winter, cool in summer

Who wouldn’t love an all-in-one climate control solution that satisfies both your cooling and heating needs, all year round? Just imagine how much money you can save for not having to buy another device to warm you up in winter. That’s definitely a big plus!

Reverse cycle air cons are energy efficient

Studies show that reverse cycle air conditioners are the most energy efficient type of electric heating. In fact, they have Energy Rating Labels to help you choose the most efficient model. Visit the Energy Rating website to find out more about the rating labels.

They’re ready to work with other smart technologies

Leading manufacturers often include Inverter Technology  with reverse cycle air conditioners. Unlike a traditional system with ‘on/off’ settings only, they automatically adjust power to reach the desired room temperature and then maintain it steadily. While it can provide even heat, you can also choose the zoning function. This allows you to control different areas of your home depending on their use and occupants’ preferences.

Reverse cycle air cons are environmental friendly

Last but definitely not least, reverse cycle air conditioners produce around one third the amount of greenhouse gases. The most efficient 5–6 star units actually produce less than one-fifth of the emissions of conventional electric heaters. Beat that!
