Back to basics – is air conditioning a need or a luxury? – Part two

Nowadays, one may think: ‘In an age of climate change, is air conditioning a need or a luxury’? The truth is, in order to keep a healthy, productive and comfortable environment, AC has truly become a necessity. Read this week’s blog and find out more reasons why we consider air conditioning has changed our lives for the better.

When looking at the evolution of air conditioning, it seems people always craved for the most desired air conditioner effect. From the old-fashioned cooling machine to the latest smart AC models you find on the market today, manufacturers have never really stopped innovating.

So is air conditioning a need or a luxury? Whilst important factors such as climate and lifestyle can strongly influence one’s opinion, here is why we consider AC is both useful and beneficial:

A successful alternative to natural cooling

To air condition or not to air condition? It’s a question of survival. However, if it’s a question of survival, how did we survive so far?

In reality, the answer is that today’s buildings have fewer natural cooling mechanisms than those of earlier days. Generally, builders or architects tend to use fewer design elements like high ceilings, thick walls or big windows for cross-ventilation. In order to compensate, the need for artificial cooling is, of course, increasing.

It may not actually be about survival but it’s definitely about all the rest!

Overall costs

Generally speaking, what was once a luxury for the wealthy is now a necessity for (almost) all. Initially, air conditioners were really expensive to run. That is because manufacturers were just using technologies known at that time, which weren’t necessarily energy efficient.

Nowadays, apart from the upfront cost, there are many ways to overcome the running costs. For example, you can choose to get an inverter model, or to add zoning system, which can save you money in the long run. You can also choose the best energy plan for you and be on top of your cooling or heating costs at all times.

So, having an AC is a luxury you can now afford; all you need to do is to know your budget.

Carbon footprint

If you are amongst the energy-conscious people out there, you probably ask yourself: ‘How much energy does my air conditioner really use’? Congratulations! This means you care about our environment. In fact, there are many ways to make your air conditioner energy-efficient at home or at the office.

Most importantly, choosing a model with a high energy star rating is probably the best environmentally friendly decision you can make. Remember the motto: ‘the higher, the better!’

Improved quality of life

Last but not least, air conditioning takes care of your well-being, whether you are at home, at the office or in shopping malls. In other words, it keeps you cool, warm, healthy, productive, comfortable and (why not?) happy.

After all, this looks like another way of saying “necessity”.
