6 easy steps for perfect air conditioning cleaning

Cleaning your air conditioning is an important step towards better energy efficiency and air quality in your home, not to mention lower running costs. Just like any other device, your split or ducted air con system needs proper maintenance to ensure optimal performance. So gear up with the necessary tools; let’s find out how to clean your home air conditioner!

1) Clean the air con condenser

First and foremost, switch off the air con unit before you do any maintenance work! The outside unit, also called the condenser, contains a compressor, cooling fins and a fan. Remove any covering if you haven’t used the air con at all last winter. Then, pull out any dead leaves, grass or other debris out of the fins. Using a soft brush, clean the condenser fins, this way air can freely flow into the unit.

2) Check the insulation on the refrigerant line

Next, make sure the insulation on the refrigerant line hasn’t deteriorated from sun exposure. You should also check it inside your home for any wear and tear there, too. If the insulation is damaged, the air can’t cool down as much, and your air conditioner will become less efficient.

3) Inspect your air con’s air filters

Equally important is that you ensure proper air filter maintenance. The more clogged the filter, the harder the air conditioner has to work to push air through it. This also means higher running costs!

For great results, just take the filters out for a good brush, then vacuum for a thorough clean. In addition, if the filters are very dirty, wash them in warm water with some mild detergent and rinse them clean. Wait until they are completely dry before putting them back into the unit.

4) Clean the evaporator fins

Furthermore, the evaporator fins should also be on your air conditioning cleaning checklist. Similar to the outdoor condenser unit, they should be cleaned with a soft brush. This way, your air conditioner will be able to absorb heat and then cool the air down. Don’t forget to check for frost on these fins, which could be a sign that the unit is leaking refrigerant.

5) Test your air con thermostat

Usually, you can rely on your thermostat for ensuring your entire family’s thermal comfort. To see if it’s still doing its job properly, perform some tests by setting it a few degrees lower. Also, check if it’s set to ‘cool’ mode and the main circuit breaker for the air con is in the ‘on’ position. If it doesn’t work, we strongly recommend you call in an air conditioning expert.

6) Schedule a professional tune-up with your local qualified technician

Finally, it’s time for an expert eye to inspect your air con system. Including a professional check in your air conditioning cleaning routine will complete the circle of trust that you and your air con unit have. In other words, a licensed technician will fine-tune your air con for a flawless operation.
